Going to Japan soon, what to buy...

Post by Trauts » Sun Dec 29, 2013 8:26 am

Hi all,

I don't usually post here, but am trying to be a bit more active (read: just realised I can access this site from work :D ).

Anyway I'm going to Japan for a holiday around April next year and will be buying myself an axe of some sort. Not sure exactly what I want yet, something a bit special, I don't like the classic 'stratocaster' type shapes. Whatever I get it has to be an ESP (der), have a non-tremolo bridge and I will be putting the EMG het set into it (yes I've already considered the Snakebyte, emailed shane and the custom shop is just shy of 5g, but it's a possibility)

I haven't been to Japan before and I'm after any advise you might have about purchasing an axe over there, or just showing me what you would get if you were me, cause I'm sure someone will come up with something I haven't thought of!

Thanks in advance for any info.

BTW didn't really know where to post this thread so feel free to move it.

You're best checking out http://www.espguitars.co.jp" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; before going but bear in mind most all the models there are by order only so if no one has stock then they won't be available while you're there. Check out Rakuten, J-Guitar and DigiMart for an idea of what stores have in stock roughly before you go. If it like the range if any particular stores you see online at those sites put them down to ensure you visit in-store during your trip.

Depending on your return trip customs may charge you duties and tax, they have the right to but often don't.

Cool, thanks for the info. I was surprised that they wouldn't have a lot of stock, but hey, it's custom stuff so that makes sense. Thanks for the links to Rakuten etc, that definately helps, and if that is an idea of what they have available on the floor I think I'll be kept very busy over there. I plan to go to most of the major stores over there and just really enjoy shopping around for a bit.

I'm aware of the customs import tax, I've bought stuff from the USA before. How do they tax you as you come back through customs tho? For example, I'm overseas now and have my Gibson SG with me. When I come back through customs are they gonna ask for proof I bought it in Australia etc? Or is it more of an honesty system?

By the way, I'm sure a lot of you have seen this, but for those who haven't, this is by far the coolest V I've ever seen: http://www.espguitars.co.jp/artist/revo/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks,

Stuart

Ah, Digimart. I used to spend hours drooling over all of the nice guitars on there.

That Edwards V is not my style at all. Looks a bit like a child's guitar IMO.

Enjoy your Japan trip. I hope to make it there some day soon.

First thing is to set your budget, then hope for a good exchange rate. If you want a Snakebyte then im sure there will be some here. Either way as mentioned Digimart is a great timewaster. Ochanomizu and Shibuya would be my first stops.

Thanks for the info. The Japanese sites are hard to navigate (My Japanese is the 'speak not read' kind) but nothing that huge amounts of time cannot solve. Found several Snakebytes, but I just can't help feeling that if I got one I'd still be GASing for that elusive explorer.

Then I came across this: http://www.espguitars.co.jp/shop/custom ... s0537.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

which besides the inlays and graphic is exactly my dream guitar! Obviously a custom job so they won't just have them lying around, but it's cool to see none-the-less. My budget is probably in the lowest end of the custom stuff, but that certainly doesn't mean I NEED to spend that much. If I do end up with such an explorer I feel like I will never have GAS again tho...

like that'll ever happen :-)

568,000 yen each, I havent checked the exchange rate lately so that might even be a reasonable price. Im not too far away, about 25 mins by train. I try not to go looking at guitars too often though, its bad for my health. :-D

Yeah thought they would be about that much. Damn. Well lets see if they are still there in April and lets see if I can withstand not buying one. I can understand not going there to often! Thanks Boneman, happy to buy you a beer if you're still around when I'm there

Spirits are sooo cheap, big bottle of Johnnie Red is like $14. Try the Suntory Hibiki for one of the best tastes in the world. Anyways I will keep an eye out for ESP Explorers, hell of a lot better than the disgusting Snakebyte. 8-)

Yeah I've heard of Hibiki before, I think it won some competition or something. Thanks for your help, the Snakebyte shape has grown on me, but it is no Explorer :smt011

Are all the Explorers there now having ebony fret boards or do they still make some with Rosewood when you see them over there?
