stef-t7 STD views from anyone thats played or had one.

Post by Kharem » Sun Dec 23, 2012 8:47 am

Hi, just wondering if anyone out there has played or owned one of the stef-t7 std's, I'm desperately trying to sell my current guitar and some other stuff to get the last one from bmusic (and the fact that its the "last one" implies that they have had others that have been sold), I've had a ridiculous want for a 7-tele after seeing a few posted on ss.org and figured the stef is pretty much exactly what I want, apart from the emg's (although some opinions on them would also be nice actually since the only 7 pickups I've played have been duncan blackouts and dimarzio crunchlab/liquifire sets, I just assumed the emg's would be similar to the 81's I had in my m1000 and wasn't a massive fan of). Just seems like most the info/videos I can find are either of the custom shop (which is probably similar enough for me to get a good idea anyway) and a very very different kind of playing and tuning, I play alot of Northlane and write similar kind of stuff so I'm usually in G# or G. Closest I could find was a video from mooloolaba music with the dude that joined thy art pretty recently but it was literally 5 seconds of playing 10 seconds of him saying the specs of it, and unfortunately I don't think I would be able to find one anywhere to try out.
I haven't played any carpenter sig models at all so some general opinions on the bridge/mid pickup layout would be nice as well, I've never been a massive solo kind of guy so I don't think it would ever be a deciding factor but it would be nice to see what people think a bout the layout.

Sorry about the massive post hahaha, thanks for any info or advice from anyone that's tried them out, or anything on the other little questions haha.

I do have the same guitar as Jonathan's new one for sale too ;)
Anywho, Ryan had one from us and I believe Trent has it now. Brett's video of the one he got froom us (Burgerman666) is custom shop, yes, but same principle pickups wise of course. He did haveus set it up in F# when we sent it to him so I'm not sure if some of his vids are with that tuning or not.

Thanks for the reply, ya I think I sore that one of the videos was in F# but there is so little of them its hard to get a good idea about it as a whole.
Just out of curiosity how do they compare to the eclipse II baritones you have? Only just notice they got dropped down a few hundred or so as well, so that's also become an option for now.

They're different beasts, neck-thru vs set neck. Maple neck vs mahogany neck. Body woods, pretty much opposites in those regards. But both are sexy as fuck either way!

I appear to have made a boo boo, the specs were listed of a Custom Shop Stef T7 on the site, the Standard Series is 25.5", not the 27" of the CS. Looks like the Eclipse is the only option out of those two with 27" scale.

So there's a baritone ESP coming but Custom Shop, more to back up no more ESP aside from Custom Shop :/ LTD baritone though, which is quite cool

Thought I might chime in here.

I own the Std ESP T7 which is indeed a 25.5 scale. The build quality and craftsmanship is outstanding, as you'd expect from ESP. I particularly love the the pearl binding on black body, really sets this guitar off for me (also reminds me of an old ESP NT ash bodied Horizon I used to own).

Middle pickup is not an issue for me as far as getting in the way when picking. I have a really heavy right hand and it never hits the pickup. You can just wind it down out of the way. Otherwise you can always take it out and order a custom pick guard to cover the space.

Kingman's T7 custom was a 27" scale neck. He commented that he actually prefers the 25.5" scale on the Std T7 he now owns. I'm sort of in the same boat as I prefer the playability of the 25.5". But if your tuning to G#, G or F# then you'll want to be getting a longer scale guitar for sure, otherwise you'll be using telegraph wires for strings :)

There's some good buying here. Practically the same specs as the ESP version.

^ That's very cool. I reckon I know a bunch of people who will be interested in that. And a bunch of people who will be interested "if only it wasn't black". I'm guessing it doesn't have the pearl binding of the "proper" version? Pity. I mean I can understand why, but still the binding really made that guitar look exceptionally cool.

Good to see some interest on this again, especially since I'm weighing up the ltd instead of pumping all my money into an et katana. As for the binding, if the pictures posted on facebook by bmusic is anything to go from, it has the binding the same as the esp. From memory and not having any other pages open, I think some of the esp to ltd differences were the tuners and nut maybe, there would definitely be more than that, plus the construction quality differences between esp and ltd, but that's all I can remember for now.
As for the earlier post about the middle pickup (sorry I stopped checking this, didn't have the money at the time so it was kind of out of mind for a bit, should have guessed the ltd released could have drawn some interest back though), I wasn't actually worried about it really impeding my playing, more affecting to do with not having a neck pickups for glassy cleaner stuff, but I've never played any of the stef sigs with this pickup config so really have no idea how much of a difference it would make. Considering the popularity of them I doubt it would really be that big a deal, and admittedly I do mainly use the bridge pickup, but if the middle is going to be more like the bridge than a neck pickup, it seems like it could limit options a little.
