Performance Piece, need advice picking song

Post by M2k » Sat Jan 30, 2010 2:54 pm

now this will be the second one ive done but the dickheads at the board dont mark fairly on different genres ive been told so im looking at this time choosing a song thats well kinda shows the different elements of music

Im looking at a Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteem song to pick up so i can get the best possible marks

any other songs out there that anyone knows of that express all the elements of music?

No, the people on the "board" are looking for dynamics, melody and interpretation. Metal and the like doesn't often show them that. Something super technical on guitar doesn't translate to good marks if it has none of the aforementioned. If school teachers and music tutors spent some time understanding the subject they're teaching and the elements of all the instruments they're involved with in their classes things would be a whole lot easier for the students they're meant to be teaching.

"Andromeda" by Marco Sfogli. Extremely technical, but shown in a way that the board would appreciate, and it's also very melodic. Definitely one of my favorite instrumental guitar songs. If that doesn't float your boat, try some Guthrie Govan, or "Always With Me, Always With You" by satch.
...because you can't spell "manslaughter" without "laughter"

Hehe @ Liam

And no, it's very doubtful that one guitar part from a "symphonic metal" song will do the job, that's a genre created by the sum of all instruments.
Let me let you in on a little secret. You can play something that you may consider quite easy to play and get an A. Because you will not be concentrating so hard on the technical aspect as you can the three criteria I mentioned. Particularly if you do a jazz or blues piece and improvise a couple of heads. There is a better tan even chance that n one on the BOARD will be a guitarist, so the technical aspect will be lost on them, and if there is a guitarist on it they won't be into metal, and will still appreciate the melody and dynamics, and very much the interpretation shown further by some improvisation.

When I was in high school, a bloke did the theme song from "Home Improvement" and apparently got an A.

The most important thing is to pick a song that isn't boaring

Naw, he means one of the questions on his last english exam was: "B+ which four letters spells board?" O, R, E and D, obviously.
