Come gather 'round.....Christmas is upon us

Post by guitarsatbmusic » Wed Dec 24, 2014 1:14 am

Christmas will be upon us tomorrow in Australia and 2014 has just days to run, with a new year to beckon in thereafter. The Year of the Wood Sheep, for those with an interest in such things, starts soon after.

So we bid adieu to 2014 and celebrate Christmas in much of the world at this special time, and I take the opportunity as I've done for many years now to reflect and thank each and every
one of you who has supported us this past year.

I'm penning this on the day we learnt of the sad passing of Joe Cocker, Joe leaving us this year along with many other musicians, young and old, including Wayne Static, Bobby Keys, Paul Revere, Dick Wagner, Tommy Ramone, Johnny Winter, Bobby Womack, Paco de Lucia, Bob Casale, Pete Seeger, Jack Bruce and Phil Everly. The impending end of the year should be a time to celebrate the work of those who have passed, along with other incredible talents such as Phillip Seymour Hoffman, James Garner, Lauren Bacall and so many more.

Perhaps the character who loomed largest that left us this year was Robin Williams. Robin said of the art that we all are so passionate about, "You know what music is? God’s little reminder that
there’s something else besides us in this universe; harmonic connection between all living beings, every where, even the stars."

I have the great pleasure of coming to work every day and connecting with people via the art that has dominated my life now for more than two decades. To deliver the tools to musicians, both established and those in waiting. Those who come in or contact us to buy their very first instrument to those who tour the world on the back of their talents.
It struck me only recently as I helped a wide eyed and keen as a kid can be youngster choose his first guitar. I had only just before seen a project from the very beginning through to a couple
of guitars being finished, delivered, and played to thousands nightly on the other side of the globe. The first photos from that tour with those instruments on stage had come in just before I
greeted this kid and his family for him to pick out the guitar he would be using for the lessons he was about to embark on. I thought to myself, the possibilities for this kid are endless, his story is not yet written. Who knows what he might make of his music. Will he embrace it like I did, like so many of my very closest of friends have done?

Soon after a father came by to buy something for his 17-year old son. I'd met this kid only briefly before. I asked the father how his son had gone in his final year high school results, whatever they call it now, TER or what have you. The father worryingly told me his son had done poorly. I asked him what it was his son wanted to do in the future. "Something to do with music", was
the gist of the response. Not to be a rock star (that was my plan!), but something to do with music because it's all he cares for and commits to. "Well, that's good news", I said. I went
on to suggest all manner of career paths that music has directly related to it. From what I do to crewing to marketing to sound and many, many more. From just my role I have met and regularly deal with people in these roles and dozens more.

As I spoke to this father it dawned on me just how many careers related to music have been opened up in recent years, thanks in no small part to the internet and the myriad avenues and
associations it has opened up for those wishing to be a part of the industry of music on one level or another. I started teaching music over 20 years ago before opening the store, and have seen a great many of my students from back then go on to careers directly related to music. I've met, as customers in-store and online, kids when they were in school who have gone on to careers in sound, lighting, marketing, A & R, engineering, manufacturing, product specialists, those who play music professionally locally and internationally, and several other roles. Almost all of them owe a significant debt to the existence of the Internet that they got to be in the positions they now enjoy. Seems to me the old adage "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life" can be pursued with vigour now more than ever.

That's what music has to offer many of us, what a wonderful thing, and an honour and a privilege to have been involved in it in my way for so long. But of all the experiences I got to enjoy thanks to music again this year, one struck me far above all others. A guy has been coming to the shop for some years now, he's a young man now, started coming in when he was in school, building up his gear very slowly when he could afford to do so.
He lives for Metallica. This year a relative came in to buy him a gift of an acoustic guitar and returned soon after to let me know how much the guitar had meant to the boy. He told me of the miserable treatment he had copped socially throughout his school years due to some disabilities he has. His disabilities are physical and I remember well the first few times he came in and how shy he was. As I've grown to know him he's become more confident, but I've always sensed life must have been extremely hard for him growing up. But Metallica, get him talking about playing those songs and his eyes light up as he shares what he's been learning or what his favourite riffs and licks are, his favourite songs to play. Music has been this kid's EVERYTHING. It's the thing that bullies couldn't take away from him, the thing he didn't have to look or sound a certain way to enjoy. In his bedroom, playing his guitar along to One or Fade To Black or Battery, like James Hetfield, he IS James Hetfield.

I don't know if he's aware of a quote from an interview James said a year or so ago. I don't expect he is, I get the impression the Internet is not for this guy. And I can imagine why if school was as hard as it was socially, why would he subject himself to the possibility of it continuing on in to his home as well. Hetfield said, "I was pretty much afraid of everything. Afraid of the world, afraid of speaking, a really, really shy kid. Music was a way to speak, simple as that. That's me telling the world about me when I can't do it on my own. So music was the voice I didn't have"

I know this guy will never give up on his music, and I look forward to him one day telling the world about himself too.

I will never be able to thank those of you who support bmusic enough. To thank you all for allowing me to continue to do the job I do, to support my family from the support you give us. Running a business certainly has it's downsides, and my family see significantly less of the old man than is optimal, but the pros far outweigh the cons. I deal with musicians every single day, and no matter what their level, I learn from them all, I get inspired by them. It's music that inspires them as it always has done me. I have made friends and friends from what were first customers thanks to a shared passion for the art of music, all across the globe. "Music is the social act of communication among people, a gesture of friendship, the strongest there is." So said prolific 20th Century English composer Malcolm Arnold, who fought alcoholism, mental illness
and the British classical establishment.

In closing, I humbly thank you all so very much for your support this year, it means more than I can ever express. Thank you to Mark, my old friend, for another year of outstanding work on some of the finest guitars and instruments available which we've had the great honour and pleasure to have been able to send to all corners of the globe again. And thank you to my long-suffering family for their unwavering support, understanding and love.

Many of you have been a part of my journey since before our boys were born, and here they are, another year older. Your custom and support has raised these guys, you are the roof over our heads and the presents
under the tree this year.

I wish you all the most happy of holiday seasons, I sincerely hope you get to play some music and to share it with your families and friends, even if for the briefest of moments. Please stay safe, indulge however you may indulge, but make it safely to 2015 so we can share again our experiences thanks to that most incredible of arts which transcends language.

May 2015 be all that you wish for it to be. There may be challenges, there may be obstacles. There may be valleys from which you must climb to reach peaks. But there will ALWAYS be music to carry you on your way.

Oh Shane, another beautiful Christmas message. Very uplifting and eye-opening as well.

Thank you very much for all your help this year. Another year has gone by, and I'm glad to have shared my journey with you and everyone on this forum.

You and Bmusic will have my eternal support, and I will continue to support it in the years to come in any way I can. I have yet to visit your premises as I have been contemplating these past few years. Would love to shake your hand and ask you if you have any Boss pedals for sale.

Merry Christmas Shane, Mark, and your families. And to everyone on this forum! Enjoy the rest of the year, and stay safe!

You might see me sometime next year. My sis in law and her hubby have just been posted to SA (he's Air Force) and they are living about 10 minutes away from bmusic. Might have to stop by finally :)
