Operation Maple Scarab....

Operation Maple Scarab...

So long story short, for a while (1-1.5 Years) now I am planning this. Things turned out to be optimal just now. I was able to grab a really nice Maple boarded HGS to do the neck swap.
The surgery took a couple of hours (4-5 I guess with set-up etc).
Today (finally) I have received the HGS MF from Slovakia. It was time to do the surgery.

Before I got to it previously I was thinking of possible issues that merge up during the process:
1, The neck pocket size or the neck size will be different and it will not fit
2, After the neck swap, the High and Low E strings will not pe perectly paralell to the endge of the fretboard
3, The thickness of the 2 necks will be different at the pocket part. It can be an issue due to the action
4, I was also afraid of the neck size differences.

List to be done:
- Swap the necks
- Remove the Brass Block and add it to the Scarb Body
- Remove D-Sonic from the Walnut and install the Original PH-R
- Install the ESP Arming Adjuster
- Oil the Walnut Body
- Full Set-up for both the guitars

....so let’s get to it!

Strength in Numbers:

Some pictures of the HGS MF. It is indeed a nice piece. Walnut has a nice chocolate tone, and the grain on the Maple board is really nice.

Walnut on the Surgery Table:

Tremolo and Cavity covers removed:

Neck removed:

PH-R back in place and also the original Trem Block. First layer of oil on the top (Fret Doctor)

So let’s put the Walnut aside and start to work with the Scarab:

Neck removed:

Will it fit???

A double neck Horus would be lovely:

So putting the necks to their new places. Number 1 possible problem on the list. They are indeed different! First I was quite freaked out, casue the standard neck did not seem to fit in the Walnut, but fortunately I was wrong. When I am telling you it is a tight fit, I mean without screws I was able to lift the guitar etc....!

Now comes the Maple neck. I took mesurements and the HGS neck at the neck pocket size is smaller. So when I put it in and lightly screwed it in there was an abaout 0.40mm gap on the lower side. The gap did not bother me (as we are talking about Bolt-on necks) but the Number 2 possible problem just became quite possible :S
Luckily the Number 3 possible issue wont happen as the Maple neck is a bit thicker (about 0.60mm)
Image

So before painting the devil on the wall, lets take a break and deal with the Walnut. I have screwed in the neck smoothly, oiled the whole body and the fretboard as well:
Image

Back to the Scarab, although the fretboard was not dirty at all, I went for a default cleaning. Now for you guys out there who are asking how to clean a Maple board. Murphy Oil Soap. On the Pro Black HGS I have the fretboard was dirty, really dirty. This stuff cleaned it so well it looked better than new.
3 parts of Water 1 part of Murphy, works like a charm:

Okay, Brass Block and arming Adjuster to be added:
Image

Before installing the Esp AA I have checked carefully where to place it, after that mesured the screw holes, test drill on scrap wood etc. So holes are rilled:
Image

Brass block in place, along with the Arming Adjuster:

Back to the Walnut, wiped down the extra oil from the body:

Not much left. Putting up new strings (10-46), setting up the action and the intonation. By the time I have finished with this sun was almost down, so I could only took some crappy pictures:

Walnut:
Image

To be honest I really dig the llok of it. Somehow the Walnut goes well with the Rosewood. My girlfriend calls it „Furniture Color”. Luckily there were no issues with the String/Fretboard edge paralellity – perfect!

Set-up aslo turned out to be amazing. I was able to do a pretty good job on this regarding the overall set-up.

When it comes to sound, I was sort of surprised. Tuned to Standard E it kicks ass. Cleans are nice and the PH-R with the Walnut does a good job for the Standard E.

I still had job to do with the Scarab. Putting all together, strings, set-up etc. (DR 10-50 strings)
I was lucky again....after putting strings on it, the String/Fretboard edge paralellity was laso perfect, just like on the Walnut.

About neck thickness (Number 4 possible issue) I took some mesurements. The HGS neck it thicker, but on this not that much. Profile is also more „rectangular” than on the Standard neck. At the 1st fret the HGs neck is thicker with 0.15-0.20mm at the 12th fret 0.60mm.

A crappy picture:

Tomorrow I will take some better pictures of them. As far as the change in the Scarab sound:
The Scarab was always a dark sounding guitar (It can be also due to the BKP Holy Diver) before putting the Maple neck on I was expecting the sound to be a bit brighter. It came true and also not quite. The maple neck added some extra monster to the tone. More chuncky. It is also a bit brighter, but not that much, but definately more aggressive.

It is still not finished, I have to set the octave on this one, action is already set. I also want to add a 3 way switch and I am seriously considering a BKP Sinner to the neck position.

...to be continued tomorrow!

Wow man, I think you really traded up with both of those. The rosewood on the walnut does look fantastic, imo better than the ebony they offer standard on it. The maple looks AMAZING on that scarab horus. I can't stress enough, you did some amazing work here and both guitars look unbelievable.

In this case nothing else.

If the body is dirty or faded I usually go with 0000 steel wool, than several layers of oil.
In this case I only used Fret Doctor (Which is pure vegetable oil)
