Modding engl fireball 60

Talk about the rest of the rig - amps, effects, valves, leads, wireless set-ups, racks, anything that brings out the best in your axes.

Modding engl fireball 60

Postby thedoctor2156 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 7:56 pm

Hi guys just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these amps.I need to replace the original 6l6gcs and ec83s because they are about 4-5years old. Pop mood seems to be to change them for tung-sol 5881. Is this a straight swap or do index to get it biased. Apparently my fireball is fixed bias. Any info would be appreciated cheers

I had the ENGL Blackmore and ended up using the ENGL branded tubes in the power section and swapped out the preamp tubes with JJ Teslas.

thanks for the reply. did you have to get the new power tubes biased or was it simple as replacing them because they were the same?

When I replaced the power tubes I had the amp serviced at the same time.
He told me that they were running pretty cold when I brought it in.

You should always Bias the tubes if you change them out.
Either you're a part of the problem or you're a part of the solution. What's your contribution to life???

got the new tubes in and biased was well worth it. replaced the 6l6s with tung sol 5881s and replaced the original 12ax7s with 1 jj and 3 tung sol 12ax7s. cuts through really well now and got rid of some of that tinny top end that i seemed to have with this amp. sounds mean as :)
