5150II PROBLEM

Talk about the rest of the rig - amps, effects, valves, leads, wireless set-ups, racks, anything that brings out the best in your axes.

5150II PROBLEM

Postby BodomNightTerror1 » Sun Feb 07, 2010 9:54 pm

Does anyone know of anyone or anywhere that could modify my 5150II to have a 2nd effects loop? I want to keep the lead channel for my main sound and keep all my rack effects going through that channel but have the second loop running my POD X3 into the clean/rhythm channel so when I switch between channels I don't have any chorus/delay effects running into my main sound. Any suggestions, I want to eliminate a second amp for that sound.

Is this something you can set up with a external set of loops and a switching system? Are you switching much between the X3 presets or leaving it essentially set on one?

I've got a TC Electronics G-System and I run the preamp of my Peavey in the Insert Loop of the G-sys, so that the compressor and wah/filter effects are before the preamp stage of the amp in the effects chain. This means I can turn the Insert Loop off in any given preset and basically bypass the preamp and go straight to the power amp stage.

But the weird thing is (and I don'treally understand why this is) bypassing the preamp gives me no control over the master volume of the amp. If i take the preamp out of the signal path neither of the Post Gain controls have any bearing over the volume, it appears to be at full volume! It's unusable but quite clean sounding!

Only explanation I have is that the Post Gain controls on the Peavey are not power amp section volume controls but an individual volume control for each channel in the preamp, which means that the power amp runs at full volume all the time and is only attenuated by the preamps being turned down. Does that sound right

So if you were to run a POD in a second effects loop and bypassing the preamp of the amp (to keep things clean) I'm not sure that would work.

I would need to see a schematic, FOT might have seen one and could more competently answer than I

I know you're in Australia so this probably isn't a big help, but contact JerryP at FJA Mods.

http://fjamods.com/

He knows all there is to know about modding 5150's.

Off the top of my head, it would be a matter of rigging up a switching circuit with some opto-couplers for the electrical isolation. It's just a matter of picking where in the circuit to do it all... That's where the wiring diagram would come in very handy.

And wouldn't you know it... While writing this I managed to find a 5150II wiring diagram

http://www.schematicheaven.com/newamps/peavey_5150-II.pdf

I don't have time at the moment to work it out, but might be able to sus it this weekend some time.
