Suitable cabs to use with a Dragon

Discussion of anything from German manufacturer Framus. From the Euro fave six stringers like the Diablo and Camarillo to the bone crushing Cobra all-valve head and everything in between.

Suitable cabs to use with a Dragon

Postby VIPER » Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:07 pm

I recently got a Dragon head, and was really disappointed of how it sounded with my ENGL 4 x 12 with V30's. It sounded great, but not as good as the sound I was getting with the ENGL Ritchie Blackmore head I had previously.

So I got my friend to come around with his 2 x 12 vertical Mesa cab, and a ENGL screamer head around to do some testing. I plugged the Dragon into the mesa cab and it sounded totally different, so much better, more gain, brighter mids, it sounded like I was expecting from the Dragon. So I then plugged the ENGL screamer into the ENGL cab and it sounded awesome, similar to how my old ENGL head sounded.

So this leads me to this question, what do yo guys think is the best cab to match with a dragon? I would think the dragon cab and the Framus 2 x 12 is an obvious choice, but I was so surprised at how different it sounded in 2 different branded cabs that both had v30's.

I am in talks with a guy that has a Framus 2 x 12 with a v30 and a greenback, would that satisfy my needs or would I be better off with a mesa one?

Cheers

Just out of curiosity, but what sort of volumes were you playing at?

From memory: at first not very loud prolly, 3-4 channel volume 1-2 master volume. but then at full volume at band prac ( 4-5 channel volume 4-5 master volume)

When comparing with the 2 x 12, I cranked the master up around 5ish, then messed around with the presence, channel volume, effects loop mix etc.

In my old band, the other guitarist in my band had a dragon he used with a mesa 4x12 (recto/os/trad) and it sounded massive, perfect match imo
